📰 THE CELESTIAL CHRONICLE THE CELESTIAL MANGROVE The Extraordinary Science of Deciding What Gets Through 23 September 2026 Greenwich Mean Time Edition Astronomy, Science and Metaphysical Correspondence By Billeigh Irish | Celestial News Correspondent A mangrove lives in a place that appears to contradict one of the most basic requirements of a plant. It needs water. Yet its roots may spend much of their lives surrounded by seawater containing concentrations of salt that would create serious physiological problems for many plants. The mangrove does not solve this by escaping its environment. It has evolved ways of regulating its relationship with it. Different mangrove species use different strategies. Some exclude the overwhelming majority of salt before it reaches the water-conducting tissues of the plant. Specialised barriers within the roots reduce the uncontrolled movement of sodium and chloride toward the xylem while water continues to enter. Research across mangrove species has found extraordinarily effective filtration, with some preventing more than 90 percent of external salts from entering the xylem stream. But exclusion at the roots is only part of the story. Some mangrove species possess specialised salt glands in their leaves. Salt that has entered the plant can be secreted back onto the leaf surface, sometimes becoming visible as tiny salt crystals. Others can compartmentalise or accumulate salts within particular tissues, including older leaves that can eventually be shed. Nature has therefore produced several solutions to the same problem. Exclude. Regulate. Store. Secrete. Release. The important point is that the mangrove remains in contact with its environment throughout all of this. Its boundary is not a wall. It is an active interface. Water enters. Necessary substances enter. Life continues exchanging material with the world around it. But not everything surrounding the plant is permitted to move through it without regulation. That gives September 23 its correspondence. Selectivity. Human beings frequently imagine boundaries as separation. Keep away. Do not contact me. Do not come closer. Leave. Sometimes those boundaries are necessary. But the mangrove demonstrates another kind. A boundary can exist while connection continues. You can listen to another person's opinion without adopting it. You can understand somebody's emotional state without making it your emotional state. You can care deeply about another person without becoming responsible for every problem in their life. You can receive criticism without accepting every criticism as truth. You can participate in an environment without allowing that environment to determine who you become. The question is no longer simply what surrounds you. The question becomes what you permit to cross into you. This is particularly appropriate on September 23 because the September equinox occurs at the beginning of the Greenwich day. Astronomically, the Sun crosses the celestial equator southward, marking the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The equinox is commonly described as equal day and night, although daylight and darkness are not precisely twelve hours each because sunrise and sunset are defined using the Sun's upper edge and atmospheric refraction alters the Sun's apparent position near the horizon. Even celestial balance is more sophisticated than dividing everything perfectly in half. That offers another useful lesson. Balance does not necessarily mean equal quantities. A healthy relationship does not require two people to contribute identically at every moment. A balanced life does not require equal hours for work, family, rest and pleasure every day. A boundary does not require saying yes and no equally often. Balance is not arithmetic. It is a relationship between different forces that remains capable of functioning. The Sun's tropical transition from Virgo into Libra provides another fitting symbolic correspondence. Virgo asks what belongs, what is useful and what requires refinement. Libra turns attention toward relationship, exchange and equilibrium. The Aquarius Moon widens the perspective further. How do we participate in something larger without surrendering our individuality within it? The mangrove answers that question biologically every day. It belongs simultaneously to different worlds. Land and sea. Air and water. Freshwater influence and saltwater tides. Its remarkable roots occupy the boundary between them. The mangrove does not require one world to disappear before it can survive in the other. It learns how to live where they meet. There is also an important distinction between a boundary and an attempt to control somebody else. Withdrawing affection so another person behaves differently is not the same as establishing a boundary. Remaining silent so somebody becomes anxious enough to pursue you is not the same as establishing a boundary. Saying no solely to produce a particular reaction is not the same as establishing a boundary. Those actions are still centred upon changing another person's behaviour. A genuine boundary begins with your own participation. What am I willing to accept? What am I willing to give? What deserves access to my time? What behaviour am I prepared to remain around? What can reach me without being allowed to define me? What needs to leave once I recognise that carrying it is harmful? The mangrove does not demand that the ocean become less salty before it grows. It regulates what happens at its own boundary. Perhaps there are environments in our lives that will never become exactly what we would prefer. People we cannot completely change. Circumstances we cannot immediately leave. Opinions we cannot prevent other people from expressing. Expectations we cannot stop others from placing upon us. The deeper freedom may lie in becoming increasingly selective about what is permitted to travel from the outside world into our internal one.
