More than ninety percent of its Earth-facing surface is illuminated, making it one of the brightest natural objects in the night sky. Rising before sunset and remaining visible until the early hours of the morning, it dominates the heavens with remarkable brilliance. While the Moon captures most people's attention, astronomers often spend evenings like this looking beyond it. The intense moonlight washes out many faint galaxies and nebulae, encouraging observers to focus instead on brighter star clusters, double stars and the intricate details visible across the lunar surface itself. Sometimes the brightest object in the sky changes what we are able to observe, reminding us that perspective often depends upon where we choose to look. The Sun continues its apparent journey through the constellation of Leo, a region of the sky that has fascinated civilisations for thousands of years. Leo has long been associated with strength, leadership and courage, but from an astronomical perspective it is home to remarkable stars including Regulus, one of the brightest stars visible from Earth. Regulus lies approximately seventy-nine light-years away and has served as an important navigational marker throughout history because of its position close to the ecliptic, the apparent path travelled by the Sun, Moon and planets across our sky. Today's feature explores a place that has inspired explorers, sailors, astronomers and dreamers alike. The Cosmic Horizon. Every observatory has one. Every traveller searches for it. Every telescope eventually points towards it. The horizon is one of the simplest features of our world, yet it remains one of the most profound. It is the place where Earth appears to meet the heavens. Of course, astronomers know that no such meeting truly exists. The horizon is an illusion created by our position upon a curved planet. As we move forward, the horizon moves with us, always revealing something new while never allowing itself to be reached. For centuries this simple phenomenon has challenged explorers. Sailors watched new lands slowly emerge beyond it. Astronomers waited patiently for planets to rise above it. Ancient civilisations built observatories aligned precisely with particular points along the horizon, allowing them to mark solstices, equinoxes and the changing seasons with astonishing accuracy. Some of humanity's earliest scientific discoveries began by simply observing where the Sun rose and set each day. The horizon became far more than a line. It became humanity's first laboratory. Modern astronomy continues that tradition. Even with powerful space telescopes orbiting above Earth's atmosphere, observatories across the world still depend upon carefully tracking celestial objects as they rise above and disappear below the local horizon.
