In Brisbane, it rises during the afternoon and is approximately 96 to 98 percent illuminated across commonly used daily calculations. Full Moon arrives on August 28. Tonight the Moon therefore appears extraordinarily close to complete. Yet there is still another perspective to come. And that gives us today's story. The Celestial Dragonfly. At first glance, a dragonfly is beautiful. Look closer and it becomes extraordinary. Its enormous eyes dominate much of its head. Unlike human eyes, dragonfly eyes are compound structures made from tens of thousands of individual visual units. Together they provide an exceptionally broad field of vision. A dragonfly is therefore experiencing its surroundings through a visual system fundamentally different from our own. It does not simply see what we see more clearly. It sees differently. That distinction is important. Dragonflies are aerial hunters and their visual systems are beautifully adapted to detecting and responding to movement. A tiny change in the position of another flying insect matters. Direction matters. Speed matters. Timing matters. The dragonfly needs information quickly because its world is constantly moving. Then there are the wings. Dragonflies possess four of them. Rather than behaving as one rigid flying surface, those wings can be moved and twisted with considerable independence. This contributes to extraordinary manoeuvrability. Dragonflies can accelerate rapidly, change direction, hover and even fly backwards. Their survival depends upon something remarkably sophisticated. Perception followed by response. See what has changed. Adjust. Continue. That makes the dragonfly a particularly appropriate companion to tonight's almost Full Moon. We often associate clarity with certainty. We imagine that if we gather enough information, eventually there will be one perfect viewpoint from which everything makes sense. Nature rarely works that way. Perspective depends upon position. Stand on one side of a mountain and you see one landscape. Move to the opposite side and the same mountain becomes something different. Look at the Moon from Earth and we see phases. Stand on the Moon and Earth itself would appear to move through complementary phases. The objects have not suddenly changed. The viewpoint has. That is one of astronomy's great lessons. Perspective changes what becomes visible. Tonight's Moon is a beautiful example. From Earth, almost its entire visible face appears illuminated. Only days ago, we saw considerably less. Nothing has been added to the Moon. The Moon has not physically grown. The changing geometry between the Sun, Earth and Moon simply allows us to see a different proportion of its sunlit hemisphere. What appears to change can sometimes be a change in what we are able to see. Human situations can work in much the same way. We can spend enormous amounts of time asking the same question from the same position. Why did this happen? Why is this person behaving this way? Why isn't something working? What am I missing? Sometimes another answer helps. But sometimes another viewpoint helps more. What happens if we look at behaviour rather than promises? What happens if we consider what another person can realistically offer rather than what we hoped they would offer? What happens if we examine a problem from the position of someone affected by our decisions? What happens if we stop asking whether something failed and instead ask what it taught us? The situation may remain exactly the same. Our understanding of it can change dramatically. The dragonfly provides another lesson here. Seeing widely would be useless without the ability to respond. Awareness without adjustment changes very little. The dragonfly detects movement and changes its own movement accordingly. Perhaps clarity works the same way. New information sometimes requires a new response. If evidence changes, our conclusion may need to change. If someone's behaviour repeatedly contradicts their words, our interpretation may need to change. If a strategy continually fails, our approach may need to change. Changing our mind when new information appears is not weakness. It is responsiveness. There is something particularly beautiful about considering this beneath an almost Full Moon. At this point in the lunar cycle, we can see nearly the entire Earth-facing lunar hemisphere illuminated. But even then, we are not seeing the entire Moon. The far side remains beyond direct view from Earth. Even apparent completeness therefore has limits. There is always another side. Another position. Another perspective. Perhaps we could remember that when certainty becomes too comfortable. The dragonfly does not survive by insisting that its first view must be the only correct one. Its extraordinary visual system continually gathers information from a changing environment. Then its remarkable wings allow it to respond. See. Assess. Adjust. Move. That is not indecision. It is intelligence operating in real time. As the brilliant Waxing Gibbous Moon rises over Brisbane on August 26, it will look almost full to the unaided eye. Two nights later, the astronomical Full Moon arrives. Until then, illumination continues increasing. The view continues changing. And perhaps today's dragonfly asks us to do something similar. Look again. Not necessarily harder. Differently. Because clarity does not always come from finding another answer. Sometimes it arrives when we discover another way of seeing the question.
