The brilliance of the recent Full Moon is receding and the lunar cycle has entered its period of reduction, integration and release. Today's natural correspondent is the lotus leaf, and hidden across its surface is an extraordinary piece of biological engineering. To our eyes a lotus leaf appears relatively smooth. Under magnification, however, its surface reveals microscopic structures covered by extremely water-repellent waxes. Water cannot easily spread across this architecture. Instead it gathers into rounded droplets which roll across the leaf, collecting particles as they travel. Science calls this superhydrophobicity and its remarkable self-cleaning behaviour the Lotus Effect. The phenomenon has become important in biomimetic research, inspiring engineers and materials scientists developing artificial self-cleaning surfaces. ([Springer][1]) But metaphysically, the most interesting part may be something much simpler. The lotus does not remain clean because nothing ever reaches it. Rain reaches it. Dust reaches it. Particles settle upon it. Its extraordinary ability lies in what it allows to remain attached. There is an important distinction here between contact and absorption. Human beings encounter emotional material constantly. Someone else's anger can reach us. An opinion can reach us. Disappointment, criticism, expectation and conflict can all enter our awareness. Yet something reaching us does not automatically mean it belongs within us. This is where the Waning Gibbous Moon and the lotus leaf meet beautifully. The Full Moon illuminated. The waning cycle asks what should now be released. Discernment is therefore not simply knowing what is true. It is recognising what belongs to us, what has something to teach us and what has already served its purpose. There is also something profound in the fact that the lotus achieves its self-cleaning ability through structure rather than struggle. Its microscopic architecture reduces adhesion. The leaf does not fight every droplet individually. Perhaps healthy boundaries can work similarly. A strong internal boundary does not require us to become emotionally unreachable. It allows experience to touch us without requiring every experience to take up permanent residence. The lotus has carried associations with purity for thousands of years, but science gives that ancient symbolism an unexpectedly tangible foundation. Its remarkable surface does not create a world without contamination. It creates conditions in which contamination has difficulty remaining attached.
