After the extraordinary solar eclipse of August 12, the sky begins another chapter.
On August 13, the Moon reaches New Moon at approximately 17:36 UTC, the same conjunction responsible for the previous day's total solar eclipse. Because calendar dates change according to location, the precise local date and time differ around the world.
In Brisbane, for example, New Moon occurs at 3:36 am on August 13. (Time and Date)
This makes today's story particularly special.
The First Light.
Immediately after New Moon, the Moon begins moving eastward away from the Sun in our sky.
Eventually, an extraordinarily thin crescent becomes visible after sunset.
At first it can be almost impossibly delicate.
A thread of sunlight.
A curve against twilight.
A beginning so small that someone not looking carefully could completely miss it.
Astronomical calculations place the Moon at only around half a percent illumination during August 13, although the exact percentage changes continuously throughout the day. (The Sky Live)
And yet that tiny amount of illumination represents something enormous.
A new lunar cycle has begun.
There is an interesting scientific detail hidden within the young crescent.
Sometimes the dark portion of the Moon can be faintly visible even though direct sunlight illuminates only the narrow crescent.
This phenomenon is called earthshine.
Sunlight strikes Earth, reflects back into space and illuminates the Moon's otherwise darkened landscape. Some of that reflected light then travels back towards us.
For a moment, Earth itself becomes a source of illumination in the lunar sky.
It is one of astronomy's most beautiful reminders that light rarely travels in only one direction.
The young Moon is also appearing against an exceptional astronomical backdrop this year.
The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak around August 12 and 13, and the New Moon creates unusually dark conditions for observing meteors away from artificial light. The Perseids originate from particles left along the orbit of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.
When Earth encounters this debris stream, tiny particles enter our atmosphere at tremendous speed and produce the streaks of light we call meteors. (Condé Nast Traveler)
So while the Moon begins almost invisibly, another celestial spectacle is unfolding across the darkness.
That combination gives The First Light a deeper meaning.
Human beings often expect beginnings to announce themselves.
We imagine the new chapter arriving with certainty.
A breakthrough.
A dramatic decision.
A moment when everything suddenly becomes clear.
Nature rarely works like that.
Seeds begin underground.
Dawn begins while much of the landscape is still dark.
A storm can end before the clouds have completely disappeared.
And a new lunar cycle begins when almost none of the Moon's illuminated surface can yet be seen.
Progress does not require spectacle.
Sometimes its first evidence is extraordinarily small.
One decision.
One conversation.
One opportunity.
One different response.
One moment when you realise you no longer want to repeat something that once felt inevitable.
We can dismiss those moments because they do not yet resemble transformation.
But astronomy teaches us to think in cycles rather than snapshots.
Nobody looks at a young crescent Moon and concludes that it has failed to become full.
We understand that it is simply early.
Tomorrow it will be different.
The following evening, different again.
Night after night, illumination increases until something that began as the finest curve of light becomes one of the brightest objects in Earth's night sky.
There is tremendous wisdom in allowing beginnings to remain small.
Not everything needs to be announced.
Not everything needs immediate proof.
And not every new direction needs to be completely understood before the first step is taken.
The first light does not show us the entire landscape.
It shows us enough to begin seeing where we are.
As August 13 moves towards evening and the sky darkens, the young Moon remains extremely close to the Sun in our sky, making observation challenging at this very early stage.
As its angular separation from the Sun increases over the following evenings, the waxing crescent becomes progressively easier to see after sunset. (The Sky Live)
Then something almost invisible becomes unmistakable.
Perhaps beginnings work exactly the same way.
We recognise them properly only after they have already started growing.
Yesterday, the Moon crossed the face of the Sun and briefly transformed daylight into darkness.
Today, another cycle begins.
Not loudly.
Not completely.
Just enough.
Because the first light never arrives as the whole sunrise.
It simply gives us enough illumination to know that darkness is ending.

In order for that process to stay accurate and undiluted, I need one question at a time, typed out and isolated. When questions are bundled together, the energy becomes scattered and it affects the precision of what comes through.
I also offer palmistry readings. In order to do this I will need both hands clearly showing all lines. I need a minimum of 15 minutes for this type of reading please note that this is not fortune telling.
